In 2023, a staggering 5,579 suicides were registered in England, translating to a provisional rate of 11.1 suicide deaths per 100,000 people. This rate is significantly higher than those recorded in 2022, 2021, and 2020, with the latter year seeing a temporary decrease due to the impact of the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic. These figures highlight an alarming upward trend in mental health crises and underscore the urgent need for effective mental health interventions. However, our current mental health services are woefully under-resourced to meet this increasing demand. Long waiting lists and high thresholds for treatment mean that many individuals in desperate need of help are left waiting. In 2023, it was estimated that the mental health waiting list had ballooned to 1.2 million people. This shortage of immediate and accessible care contributes significantly to the growing mental health crisis. Furthermore, data from the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) reveals that at least 20,000 incapacity benefit claims are for mental health reasons, with approximately 100,000 people with mental health problems applying for Employment and Support Allowance (ESA) each year. These individuals undergo assessments and are often placed in the Support Group, indicating the severity and chronic nature of their conditions. Given this dire situation, there is a pressing need to expand the number of qualified therapists who can provide much-needed support and intervention. Clinical hypnotherapy is one such avenue that has proven to be highly effective in treating a range of mental health issues, including depression, anxiety, addiction, and more. By training more therapists in clinical hypnotherapy, we can build a robust network of professionals equipped to tackle these challenges head-on. Joining a movement of therapists dedicated to improving mental health services can create a supportive network that offers a beacon of hope in these dark times. By expanding the pool of skilled therapists, we can help reduce the burden on our overstrained NHS and provide timely and effective care to those in need.
